Onward in 2016 – Interview of Khiary Gray-Pitts
[Interview by Pattee Mak – January 10, 2016] Middleweight, Khiary Gray-Pitts (11-0-0, 9 Ko’s) of Worcester, Massachusetts currently holds the UBF North Eastern Junior Middleweight Title and he’s only 23 years old. Gray-Pitts fights for the 2nd time in his pro career as the main event against Cameron Rivera (6-2-1) on February 19, 2016 in Twin River Casino, Lincoln, Rhode Island. 8 Rounds for the Junior Middleweight WBC youth world title and he will be defending his UBF North Eastern Junior middleweight belt
.
Pattee Mak: Rivera will be your opponent come the 19th . He has 5 knockouts on his record. He isn’t from around here. Did you take the fight instantly or did you do your research?
Pitts: I took it as soon as his name popped up when CES gave us his name. He was the first name that came up. I said yes right then and there.
Pattee Mak: That’s a good thing since I know in the past fighters usually don’t want to fight you.
Pattee Mak: What if anything do you know about Rivera?
Pitts: I don't know anything about him but he has a lot of amateur experience that's it basically but it will be an interesting fight I can tell you that.
Pattee Mak: Are you fans still yelling at you for more ring time during a bout?
Pitts: My fans always tell me are we going to get more than one round in this time. Hahaha I say you gotta come and find out but they happy though cause they know I was doing my job. I see an opening and I take advantage of it.
Pattee Mak: This will be your 2nd time as the main event and you only started with CES in 2014. How does this make you feel being the main event on the card?
Pitts: It feels great to be the main event again. It means I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. I'm putting people in the seats. The fans love knockouts and that's what I'm giving.
Pattee Mak: And my motto is get in and get out.
Pattee Mak: I know this is going to sound funny but 8 rounds? You haven’t been past 4 rounds since 2014. I hope you have been doing your road work. But then again you haven’t been past 2 rounds since 2014.
Pitts: Hahah that's true. My second and third pro fight were the only times I went the distance but it don't bother me. I'm always going to be ready to do the rounds. My trainer has me doing a lot of rounds in the gym, 10-15 round sparring straight. No rounds off. So I'm not worried about 8 rounds and I am still running and doing sprints, so we won't have a problem.
Pattee Mak: You are becoming a belt collector. Should I assume you will keep defending your titles and looking for additional titles?
Pitts: I will be collecting belts. It's a new hobby hahaha but I will love to defend it as much as I can to make it to where I wanna be. That's a World Champion at 154 lbs then maybe go down to 147 lbs and get a title there also.
Pattee Mak: As your record increases so will your opponents. Are you ready for the opposition?
Pitts: I'm always ready. Every fight I have I want it to be another step up the ladder. I don't want easy tomato can fighters.
Pattee Mak: First fight in 2016. You fought 8 times in 2015. Dammm you were kept busy. Some would envy you cause others only fought once or twice and can’t even get on a card. Congrats to you for that. I believe you mentioned to me that a one fight in particular didn’t come together. Do you like fighting almost every month?
Pitts: Yes I fought 8 times last year. It was a crazy but a great year. I fought on Roc Nation [Jay Z] card. I fought on Banner Promotions and Star Boxing. I was on the same card with former WBO JR MIDDLEWEIGHT Champion “Boo Boo” Demetrius Andrade (22-0-0, 15 Kos) and with Hank Lundy (26-5-1, 13 Kos) it was a great experience to fight on the same card with those two. There was only one card that didn't happen. That was the Roy Jones Jr. (62-9-0, 45 Kos) card. But I can say I like being busy.
Pattee Mak: Yes I remember the Jones card at Foxwoods.
Pattee Mak: Are you looking to keep as busy in 2016.
Pitts: This year I'm hoping at least 5-6 times this year.
Pattee Mak: Will there be a bus from Worcester going to your fight?
Pitts: Unfortunately not for this fight cause the holidays have just passed. So there will be no bus this time. The next fight you will see the bus and a huge crowd.
Pattee Mak: Thanks again for the interview. I look forward to seeing you on the 19th.
Pitts: You are welcome. People can get ahold of me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Toosharpboxing/ Instagram: Toosharpgray.
