Danny O'Connor Goes the Distance & Retains his World Boxing Council (WBC) International Silv
Main Event: Scheduled - 10 Rounds Jr Welterweights
Danny O’Connor from nearby Framingham, Massachusetts met up against Steve “the Dragon” Claggett of Canada. This was an excited bout with competitive action. O’Connor controlled must of the bout with both fighters getting their shots in. Claggett had the shorter reach and tried to get in on the inside but had to eat the punches on the way in to connect with O’Connor. While O’Connor jabbed, Claggett had some great defense while bobbing and weaving. You don’t see much of that anymore. Round 4, Claggett had a cut from a punch. Round 7, O’Connor down by an overhand right. After 10 rounds the judges scored the bout 97-92; 97-92; 96-93 all in favor of O’Connor by UD. O’Connor increased to 30-3, 11 KOs and retained his World Boxing Council International Silver Super Lightweight title and Claggett 26-5-1, 17 Kos.
Co-Main Event: Scheduled 8 Rounds - Jr Featherweights
TJ Doheney of Ireland vs. Hartford, Connecticut’s Mike “The Machine Gun” Oliver. Oliver hasn’t been in the ring since 2015 and I was hoping for the old Mike Mike to be back in the ring. The opening round was a busy one with Doheney getting a cut on his forehead. In the 2nd, Doheney landed a hook and Oliver goes down for the count, got back up and referee Kevin Hope thought Oliver couldn’t continue and stopped the bout at 2:18 of round 2. Doheney gets the TKO victory. Oliver expressed his thoughts with Hope in the ring. Some thought the fights should have continued. Doheney increased to 19-0, 14 Kos and Oliver 26-8-1, 8 Kos.
Scheduled - 6 Rounds Jr Lightweights
William Foster III of Hartford, Connecticut took on a more experienced veteran in the ring, Nick Otiendo of Silver Springs, MD. Opening round was competitive but Otiendo couldn’t plant his feet firmly on the canvas. Otiendo’s corner whipped the soles on his feet in-between rounds but that didn’t help. In the 2nd, it was more like a slip and slide for Otiendo and Foster landed and Otiendo went down for the count. Otiendo went down again by an uppercut and the bout was called off at .23 of round 2. Foster increased to 6-0 5 Kos and Otiendo 31-14, 13 Kos.
Scheduled 10 Rounds - Jr Middleweights
Greg Vendetti of Stoneham, Mass has been kept busy in the squared circle since his pro debut in 2013. Last night he fought Engleberto Valenzuela of Mexico. The bout ended quickly when Vendetti opened up with a barrage of punches and got the KO victory at 2:10 of the 1st round. Vendetti increased to 18-2-1, 11 KOs and Valenzuela 11-13, 3 Kos.
FEMALES: Scheduled 4 Rounds - Featherweights
Amanda Pavone of Burlington, Massachusetts had an interesting bout against an injured Sarah Click of Framingham, Massachusetts who made her pro debut. During round 1, Click injured her right hand during the round and fought mostly while jabbing Pavone. Pavone looked heavier than normal in the ring and tried to backup Click against the ropes but Click couldn’t be held. Pavone ended up with her left eye swollen. After the 3rd and before the 4th round, the fight was called off. Amanda Pavone gets the TKO victory and increased to 3-0, 2 KO and Click 0-1.
